The Department of Basic Education says it is inundated by calls from schools in Limpopo claiming the DA wants to force them to publicly declare that they have not received books regardless of the evidence of delivery. They say the fishing expedition of the DA is an attempt to keep the issue about textbooks alive for cheap political point scoring and that even bodies like Section 27 and the Principal Association have accepted that compared to last year, the delivery of textbook this year has been outstanding.
There are shortages due to the changes in learner enrolments across provinces but the Department has received a communiqué from all schools outlining the shortages and have dispatched teams to rectify the situation urgently.
"My view...is that the DA is doing what the DA does...and that is stirring where it can...it is also true that the department is pulling out all stops to ensure delivery - it is a complex task 90 something percent is not yet 100 percent but we are getting closer. Changes in learner enrollments play a big part - even rainy season and flooding rivers in the Limpopo factored in!"
